The tool that changed how I work: I talk, the computer writes

I'm going to tell you about something that took me embarrassingly long to try. Something that costs $10 a month and completely changed the way I work every day. I'm talking about voice typing – and specifically, Wispr Flow.

Enjoying this? There's more where this came from.

Practical guides, new tools, and AI & digital tips — straight to your inbox, once a week. Never miss a thing.

I used to type everything. Every email, every message, every prompt for Claude, every idea that popped into my head – all through the keyboard. Now? I talk. Just talk. In Hebrew, in English, even switching languages mid-sentence. And it just figures it out.

Parts of this page were dictated on my phone while walking. No sitting at a desk. Not a single word typed.

What is voice typing, and why is it different from what you think?

Most people hear "voice typing" and think of Google or Apple dictation. You know, the thing that misses every other word, doesn't understand your accent, and puts punctuation in weird places. Forget that.

The new generation of voice typing runs on AI. It doesn't just "transcribe what you said." It understands what you meant. It corrects mistakes, adds proper punctuation, and turns speech into written text that reads like you sat down and carefully composed it.

The difference between old and new generation

  • Old generation (regular dictation): Transcribes word-for-word. No context understanding. Struggles with accents. Gets confused by background noise. Includes all your "umms" and "ahhs."
  • New generation (AI voice typing): Understands context. Cleans up phrasing. Filters filler words. Auto-detects languages. Adds smart punctuation. The text comes out clean and ready.

Wispr Flow: The tool I use every day

After trying several options, I landed on Wispr Flow and it stuck. Here's why.

What does it do?

Wispr Flow sits in the background on your computer (Mac or Windows). When you want to voice type, just press a hotkey and start talking. The text appears directly in whatever app you're using – Gmail, WhatsApp Web, Claude, VS Code, Google Docs, Slack, anywhere there's a text field.

Why is it special?

  • Works in every app. No special app needed. Just press and talk, wherever you are.
  • Auto-detects languages. I start in Hebrew, switch to English, go back to Hebrew – it just follows. No language toggle button needed.
  • Cleans up your text. If I said "uhh, wait, what was I saying, oh right, so the topic is digital marketing" – it writes: "The topic is digital marketing." It filters the mess and keeps the substance.
  • Smart punctuation. Periods, commas, question marks – all in the right places. Without saying "period" or "comma."
  • Fast. Text appears almost in real time. No annoying delays.

How to install and get started

Step 1: Download

Go to the Wispr Flow website and download the app. There's a Mac version and a Windows version. Installation takes about a minute.

Step 2: Sign up

Register with your email. There's a free trial period. After that it's $10 per month – less than a Netflix subscription, and in my opinion worth a thousand times more for productivity.

Step 3: Set your hotkey

In settings, you can choose which key activates voice typing. The default works great, but you can change it to whatever feels comfortable.

Step 4: Just talk

Press the key, talk, release. Text appears. That's it. Nothing complicated here.

Scenarios where voice typing changes everything

1. Writing long emails

Instead of sitting and typing a 5-paragraph email, I just talk. "Hey John, wanted to update you on the project. We finished phase one, results are great, here's what we did..." – and the email is ready. Quick edit and send. Instead of 10 minutes – 2 minutes.

2. Prompts for Claude and ChatGPT

This might be the best use case. AI briefs need to be detailed, and we're all lazy with the keyboard. With voice typing, I give long, detailed briefs because it costs me zero effort. "Write me an email to a client, he runs a hair salon in Tel Aviv, his audience is women 25 to 45, he specializes in organic products, and I want the email to be friendly but professional, with an offer for a free consultation." Done. 15 seconds.

3. Ideas while walking

How many times has a great idea hit you while walking or driving, and by the time you got to your computer you forgot it? With voice typing on your phone (or directly through the Claude app), I dictate ideas on the move. They're waiting for me, ready, when I get back to my desk.

4. Meeting documentation

Right after a meeting, while everything's fresh, I talk for 2-3 minutes and dictate a summary. "Meeting with Danny, discussed three topics: budget, timeline, and scope. He wants to start next month, budget of 15K, first priority is the website." – I have organized documentation without sitting down to write.

5. Long WhatsApp messages

We all receive voice messages and don't like listening to them. With voice typing, you speak but the other person gets text. Everyone wins.

6. Content creation

Social media posts, blog articles, product descriptions – everything is faster when you speak. The writing comes out more natural, more human, and less "stiff" than typed text.

Questions I always get asked

Does it work in Hebrew?

Yes, and excellently. This was my biggest surprise. Hebrew, English, and even switching between them mid-sentence.

What about background noise?

The tool filters background noise very well. I've used it in coffee shops, in the car, and outdoors. As long as you have a decent microphone (even the built-in laptop mic works), you're fine.

Does it save what I say?

Wispr Flow processes the audio and deletes it. They don't store recordings. Worth reading their privacy policy if this matters to you.

Does it work on phone?

They primarily work on desktop (Mac/Windows). For phone, you can use the built-in voice keyboard on iOS and Android which has improved dramatically, or dedicated apps.

How fast can you get used to it?

It feels weird on day one. You're talking to your computer and feeling a bit silly. After a day or two you get used to it. After a week you don't understand how you lived without it.

Tips I learned from experience

1. Don't try to be perfect

Just talk naturally. The tool cleans up the text. You don't need to speak like a news anchor. Talk like you'd talk to a friend.

2. Use it for first drafts

Voice dictation + quick keyboard editing = the perfect combination. Dictate the raw idea, then go through and make small adjustments.

3. Combine with Claude

The most powerful combo: dictate a detailed brief to Claude by voice, it gets an excellent brief because you didn't cut corners on details, and produces an excellent result. It's a cycle of efficiency.

4. Try it while commuting (not while driving!)

Sitting on a train or bus? Perfect time to summarize ideas, write emails, or plan your day. Just remember to speak quietly if there are people around.

The numbers: How much time does it actually save?

Here's a simple calculation:

  • Average typing speed: 40-60 words per minute
  • Average speaking speed: 130-150 words per minute
  • That's 2.5-3x faster

If you type two hours a day (emails, messages, documents, prompts), voice typing saves you an hour and fifteen minutes every day. That's six and a half hours a week. That's an entire workday back in your pocket.

And $10 a month? That's the highest ROI investment you can make.

The bottom line

AI voice typing is one of those things where once you try it, you don't go back. It's simple, it's cheap, and it changes the way you work every day. You don't need to be technical, you don't need special knowledge. Just download, activate, and talk.
